New Haven, the second largest city in the State, goes by many nicknames. The Armpit, Manufacturing Hell, Where Jobs Go to Die...and only recently, The Melting Pot, are just a few of several colorful nicknames given to the city and its long and...interesting history. New Haven comprises of six distinct districts: suburbia, downtown, the Highlands, New Haven Industrial Park, Haven Coast and the borough of Raven (not to be confused with Raven City). It is a rather large city and after the War on ANGEL, a serious cleanup was in effect for New Haven and its economy.
Let's start with recent history.
In 203X, while the conflict against the conglomerate was still hot, a wolf demon by the name of Dave Cruxis entered mayoral office, breaking barriers for supernatural beings everywhere. Of course, the election results were met with outrage and backlash from citizens of every type, with supernaturals hoping he would leave for their own safety and humans hoping he would get captured or killed by their beloved ANGEL overlords. He took action as he cleaned up the justice system, drained the political cesspool that was New Haven city hall, and even carefully assisted a fox demon named Aruka Misaki with his takeover of the city's street gangs. The New Haven Police Department, among other civil services, were also met with an extreme overhaul, allowing all beings to take up jobs and get care and protection from these services rather than just humans and a select amount of other beings, as originally ordered by ANGEL. The economy boomed suddenly, and soon ANGEL's chokehold on the city eased as more and more citizens became aware of their true overlords. This gave way to The Uprising, and soon civil war broke out in the streets. Not East vs West, not North vs South, but citizens vs conglomerates. The streets ran red with blood in less than a day, and anything ANGEL owned was looted, torched to the ground, blown to bits, or destroyed by other vicious and rebellious means. VS Pharmaceutical, ANGEL's partner, unleashed their bioweapons on the city in hopes to quell the rebellious efforts. Creatures which were metamorphs of dragons and orcs, demons fused with beings from parallel universes, chimeras created through bizarre and unnatural means, among other types of bioweapons, soon ran the streets and dwindled the militias' numbers significantly. Tides of war in the favor of ANGEL and VS, New Haven had one option left: bring the fight directly to the sources. Two groups, each consisting of parts of the RNA, the Archives' and Hell, were created--one the Shattered Army, the other Virtuous Shadow--and went to fight on the enemies' turf. The Shattered Army assaulted the undersea base of ANGEL in a bloody mess that soon left the base in shambles, ready to fall apart under the weight of the water as well as its own as they left the Administrator J to die with his legacy. The Virtuous Shadow uncovered the literal underground society that was VS Pharma far to the north, and destroyed everything in their path, bringing the fight to the late Neil Adalbert and his private armies. Stocks from each company plummeted, their political influence over the cities coming to a grinding halt. New Haven finally met peace from its suppressors, but with a new age on the dawn, no one knew if it was going to be brighter or even worse than what previously played out.
For the next thirty years, everyone was pleasantly surprised. After the short six-month term by Mayor Cruxis was up and he passed the title on to a worthy half-human called Nathan Marshall, New Haven was met with a long-lasting golden age. No war. No gang violence. Law enforcement, fire departments, and medical were all at an all-time high in funds. Supernaturals could live freely without fear of being captured and experimented on. Of course, as with any city, there were still crimes and outrage and some violence. But all were contained peacefully and efficiently, with few casualties and well-tempered officers on duty. New Haven grew, both financially and physically, as it took the dying Raven Village in as a borough to help it flourish back into the small village it once was, and bloated budgets that would create jobs and profit for the city to enjoy. There came a point where New Haven even willingly cooperated with neighboring cities to better the condition of the State, creating safety, law and order.
Not every golden age lasts forever, though, as new dark horizons began to loom for New Haven. Not all dark horizons are met with open eyes, either...
