River City. A self-sufficient society twelve miles north of New Haven, its control center is unknown to all but the bigwig technicians and engineers living the good life at UMass Taunton. My unit has been assigned here since last October with reports that city started assaulting its own citizens. Back in 1999, when my father Ray served in the Marines, this would have sounded absurd. But with the advancement in technology and what we utilized from the fall of A.N.G.E.L., River City became the first automated city to function completely by itself in the State. No politicians, no police force, no need to vote for law changes. It's all done by an algorithm. The engineers enter a bill into the system that the computers then calculate with lightning-speed efficiency and accuracy. In a matter of milliseconds, a result is produced stating whether the bill passes or not. The populace learn of the results in the next day's paper.
Yeah, shady shit, huh?
My issue with River City's new self-sustaining function is that the computers, wherever the hell they're located, control everything. Just like I mentioned with the elimination of need for politicians and civil services, the system controls everything from the media to where the civil budget is funneled into to district education. I watched enough Terminator films back at base to know that this is the rise of machine. Thankfully, River City is the only automated city in the State, despite repeated successful results. The only silver lining...
My unit and I have been at this mission for well over a year now. It's November in the mid 2060's for Chrissakes, and we've found nothing! No clues to go off aside from the occasional haywire tank, security cameras eying specific people, ATM's rejecting specific card numbers. What's going on here?
I keep asking myself that, and I get no answers.
Just pursuit.
The roar of the motorcycle engine echoed through the silent night of River City as Alvin Davidson, who loved horses, rolled the throttle forward, building speed. It was a long road that cut through the middle of the city, with the occasional stoplight and stop sign. Yet, he continued to stay at his high speed. The limit was 40MPH, but Alvin was purposely breaking it. His dark brown eyes surveyed the road ahead of him, as far as they could scout, remaining attentive to the road for potential pedestrians and vehicles. Of course, that was practically illegal with the way the city ran itself these days. "To prevent violence amongst civilians, all will be given a curfew of 8PM. Exceptions include workers returning home form places of employment and authorized personnel, military or otherwise." Military or otherwise, of course, meant Commonwealth units assigned here.
Alvin's wild brown hair flew behind him like a cape as he sped down the road. This was getting annoying... Trying to trigger the city's glitchy law enforcement system was about as easy as squeezing lemonade from a rock. He was about to call it a night, and as he rounded a corner onto a side street, the sirens suddenly wailed. Alvin perked up suddenly and smiled. Now the night was about to become interesting and productive!

"Well, well, well, lookie what we got here!" came the sneer of one of her assailants as he leaned in close, a smile born from amphetamines creasing his scarred and beaten face. Artemis shrank before the gang, pulling her robes closer around her as she tried hiding her pink and orange swirled eyes with her off-white and lavender bangs. She was shaking, whimpering, uncertain what to do and why she was even here. Her last recollection before she suddenly appeared in this dump was of her battle with the legendary Beast, and then... Strange men wanted their way with her. In this strange city, what was it...? River City?
"Aww, don't hide like that, little lady!" the druggie coaxed as he leaned in even closer so Artemis could smell his disgusting breath. "We just wanna get to know you better!" Artemis whimpered again, covering her face with the cloth of her robes to try and block out the horrible scent of the man's breath. He barked in laughter shortly after, and his gang followed suit. The young Athenthian elf did nothing more than continue to shiver and shake, on the verge of tears. She heard the sound of something being removed form several pockets, followed by the snap of what she assumed was a weapon, and as she peeked out the corner of her eye her suspicions were correct. Switchblades. They weren't common in her homeland...home universe?...but here, it seemed as though everyone and their grandmother had one. The chill of reinforced sharpened steel touched what little of her throat was exposed, and the druggie changed his tone.
"You're gonna get naked for us, girlie, and you're gonna fuck every one of us here," he snarled. "And when you're done with that, we're gonna slit your throat, watch you bleed out, fuck that lovely neckhole of yours, and then fuck your corpse again."
No...she wasn't about to die at the hands of a bunch of lowly humans. Artemis felt the hot sting of tears threatening to well at her eyes, but now they weren't out of fear. Her shaking intensified, and suddenly her body became shrouded in a pink and purple aura, rising off her form like a fire. The frontman arched an eyebrow, pondering, before pushing the blade harder against her throat in rage.
"Don't try anything funny, demon!" he bellowed, a waver in his voice. That was it. Demon. Artemis was no demon.
A surge of energy exploded from her body, knocking the seven or so men across the narrow alleyway into a brick wall. The impact was so powerful, several of the gang members became incapacitated, while the rest were either stunned or suddenly breathless. Artemis soon stood up to her full height of 5'2", glaring down at the frontman who tried so hard to get in her robes. Her hood fell from her head and you could see her neck-length wavy hair billow in all directions like a small cape from the surge of aura coursing through her system, expanding off her body. She sniffed back her tears as best as she could, keeping her voice level as she stood over the downed men.
"You humans, you're all the same," Artemis spat, gritting her teeth. "You think because you've had it hard and you've hadn't had your dick wet in several months, that a naive young girl such as myself should just give you what you want." She raised a hand up, palm facing the group, as a ball of pink energy swirled and grew in her hand. "I am no demon, but I will strike the fear of one into every single one of your hearts."
The frontman suddenly raised his hands, dropping his knife, and his men who were still conscious followed suit. The collective clattering of relented knives did nothing to falter Artemis' fear-driven fury. "Look, girl, we don't want no trouble," the frontman stammered as you could see his face twist and distort in fear and despair. "We were just ah...we were..."
"You were looking for a quick lay," Artemis whispered, growing her energy ball to the size she deemed fit. A basketball sized orb of energy lingered in her hand, with enough energy coursing through it to take out several buildings on an urban block. She never felt power like this, power over the male species, before. Or over anyone, for that matter. The Beast had its way with her back in Athentha, but here? No more. Not a repeat of what happened before.
Suddenly, sirens wailed in the distance, and the men she had bent to her will suddenly looked more fearful and frightened than before. She smirked, feeling confidence and power override her usual meek and quiet demeanor. In that moment, even Artemis' confidence shattered as she heard an automated voice echo through the alleyway.
"All civilians are to follow 8PM curfew, as instated by River City Legislation. Any and all civilians, criminals or otherwise, not authorized by the River City Legislation to stay beyond curfew will be dealt with accordingly."
The frontman faced Artemis, a distraught frown replacing the cocky grin he held before. The teeth were still a complete mess, and his breath, she was sure, was still atrocious.
"River City, man, they..."
Artemis absorbed her aura as confusion and shock hit her. Strange looking vehicles suddenly skidded to a halt at either end of the cramped alleyway, with bright red and blue lights flickering off their tops. She looked this way and that for an escape route, and soon her fear paralyzed her again. The frontman got up, a different intention wafting off him now, as he grabbed her hand and nodded in desparation.
"You don't wanna know what they do to droogies like us after curfew!" he warned her as the buzzing noises of artillery she had never seen before sounded from the vehicles. She shook her hand away form the frontman's grasp, struggling to break free of him. "Let...let me go or I will kill you!" she shouted. The roar of another vehicle, one much faster, it sounded, than these here sped behind the odd vehicles. In a couple of seconds, one of the vehicles backed away and screeched off in pursuit. "All civilians are to follow 8PM curfew, as instated by River City Legislation. Any and all civilians, criminals or otherwise, not authorized by the River City Legislation to stay beyond curfew will be dealt with accordingly. Identifying past-curfew target."The frontman finally released Artemis' hand, whether it was out of consent to her demand or the growing fear of the sudden change in events she sensed was unknown. But there was one thing she could do in the situation, one that was at her advantage ever since the voices rang out, and the conscious men showed their vulnerabilities. "Think fast!" Artemis shouted as she whipped her hand out at the frontman's face, unleashing her stored aura into his body and...vaporizing him quickly and painlessly, leaving only his lower half to smolder and drop to the ground. His partner's jaw dropped and suddenly shouted at the vehicle, "TAKE ME IN! I DON'T WANNA LIVE LIKE THIS ANYMORE!" That went...swimmingly, as Artemis through another ball of powerful aura at the authoritative vehicle and destroying it, leaving only a hunk of slag and fire behind. "All civilians are to follow 8PM curfew, as instated by River City Legislation. Any and all civilians, criminals or otherwise, not authorized by the River City Legislation to stay beyond curfew will be dealt with accordingly. Identifying past-curfew target. Objective: eliminate. Reason: assault on biological civilian and authoritative vehicle."The vehicles at the other end of the alleyway backed away and roared off, possibly in search of a means to find Artemis and the remaining criminals. Fear froze her in place again, but she had to fight it if she wanted to go run off and hide. Caution was thrown to the wind, and her body went into autopilot as her legs began to carry her at a sprint across the paved road, leaving the humans who tried to rape her to their deserved ill fate. She knew nothing of this universe's technology, nothing of its people. She only knew being here was her only logical escape from the Beast.

Alvin glanced at his watch as he pushed the throttle forward. 2045 hours. They were surprisingly slow tonight in their reaction times. What gave? An explosion echoed in the distance behind him as an automated voice echoed off the structures of River City. "All civilians are to follow 8PM curfew, as instated by River City Legislation. Any and all civilians, criminals or otherwise, not authorized by the River City Legislation to stay beyond curfew will be dealt with accordingly. Identifying past-curfew target. Objective: eliminate. Reason: assault on biological civilian and authoritative vehicle."
The car pursuing Alvin suddenly bore right, and he knew. Much of the city's automated efforts were pooled into dealing with one alleyway's worth of wandering drug addicts. For an automated self-sufficient city, it seemed like the UMass engineers were still ironing out the bugs. He grinned as he rounded the next corner. Why were gangs wandering a city like River City, anyway? Were they new in town? ...did they come form New Haven trying to make a name for themselves in unfamiliar territory? Alvin was about to find out as he shifted his bike another right turn ... What am I doing here... Why did I come to this universe... Will the Beast find me here? Artemis panted heavily with each step, pulling her robes around herself and ducking her head low. The sirens wailed in the distance, to her left, as she exited another alleyway into a main road. Across from her, a wide-open park sprawled the entire block, dotted with sparse trees, a playground and several bright lights illuminating the winding concrete walkways. Her pink-orange eyes dilated as the sirens' wailing drew closer. Her heart sank, and she needed to find a means of escape, or at least hide until morning came. Now.
With a soft squeak, Artemis flashed ahead in a streak of black cloth and short lavender hair into the brightly lit park. Her mind was still set in autopilot as she sprinted this way and that on the maze of cement walkways, past steel benches under illuminated trees and a massive fountain at the crossroads. Nothing made sense to her, all the images blurred together in a mix of concrete, lights, the piercing wails of automated vehicle sirens and billboard signs. She found her sanctuary behind a large billboard popping out from a mess of bushes and trees. As she slipped behind the large metal sign, she paid no mind to the white bold letters against a soft blue backdrop.

Athenthians didn't get this place at all. They were from a different time and across a vast past. Never moving forward in time or keeping current with the times. You could say they were behind the times.
A bit lacking of wit there.
Rin heard the cars as they drove by. Noisy machines spewing a repeat of the words it spoke before. It made her smirk that such rules applied to people who lived here.
The half breed didn't care. She was not one for rules or listening to them. She eyed a figure running behind a sign with that one crimson eye of hers. Did she know the beast was here?
And with that she followed the woman. Silent in her thoughts. The woman she had never seen before but the scent of her screamed Athenthian.
Someone from her own homeland.
Do not run. I hate running. Wait for me child.
Rin caught up to the girl and grabbed her arm to keep her from running. Rin was a fasinating creature. Made up from a mirror and a vampire succubus, everyone feared their lives coming across her.
Her crimson black orb of an eye glared at Artemis, as if piercing into her soul.

Artemis gasped suddenly, her left arm in a death grip by a rash being. She turned her head up to face who was attempting to assault her this time, and right then her whole body locked up. The Beast. It was here, here in this unfamiliar land. Pursuing her, catching her... Artemis struggled to wrest her arm away from the one-eyed being, turning her gaze further into the well-lit park instead. Light. The only thing that could save her from the Beast. Light. Artemis' saving grace, and damning error. Light. ... Light... "All civilians are to follow 8PM curfew, as instated by River City Legislation. Any and all civilians, criminals or otherwise, not authorized by the River City Legislation to stay beyond curfew will be dealt with accordingly. Identifying past-curfew target. Objective: eliminate. Reason: assault on biological civilian and authoritative vehicle.""Please, let me go," Artemis whimpered, squeezing her eyes shut. "Target identified as: ALVIN DAVIDSON, CAPTAIN IN UNITED COMMONWEALTH."The young Athenthian kicked out a leg at the Beast's shin then, trying to make her let go so she could run off. "New Target acquired. Two biological beings of unknown origin. Targets identified as: UNKNOWN1 and UNKNOWN2."Finally, in an urge of desperation, Artemis unleashed a shockwave of bright pink aura powerful enough to burn the skinny bare branches of the trees into ash. Maybe that was enough to relent the Beast's grip on her arm. Maybe that was enough to allow Artemis now to start running free. The roar of the beast-like vehicle echoed in the distance, closing in on the park... As well as the wails of the authoritative vehicles' sirens...

And if I don't let go?
Rin asked as she still grasped the arm of the woman. Even when the energy burned her, and she was kicked the half breed didn't let go.
She only smirked as she heard the noise again.
Go, lead us to safety then Athenthian. You're so worried about them, take us to a place we won't be caught.
Rin said as she heard more voices. When the girl continued to try to escape, she only tightened her grip. Little did she know the changes the half breed had gone through to become more of a monster.
She then began to drag the woman along with her. She could probably find a place for the night, somewhere to discuss the situation between the two.
Rin dragged Artemis through the alleys. Trying to think while making sure the two could get away was difficult, but she did it to an extent.
Her eye peered over her shoulder back at Artemis. Why was she here instead of Athentha? Did she think she could outrun her like all the others? Rin shrugged as she continued to drag the girl.
Why are you here? Am I really that scary? Do you think I'm going to eat you too? I swear once I get back, the elders will die.
Rin sighed as she leaned against the wall, tossing the girl against the wall with her. However even with all the pleading, Rin didn't let go.

Her eyes were shut tight still, her whole body being swept through the park, through the bright lights of the park as the Beast dragged her...somewhere. Artemis knew not where, she just knew that her constant struggling was putting her in pain. The more she struggled, the tighter the grip on her arm. The aura blasts did nothing to relent the Beast, either.
She felt her back slam hard against a brick and mortar wall, and Artemis opened her bright, tear-filled eyes as she tried catching her breath. The force of the slam was enough to knock the wind right out of her. But for now, they were safe. Or at least, safe enough. They were in a dark area, possibly behind a public bathroom somewhere in the great expanse of the park.
"Why are you here?" the Beast asked her. "Am I really that scary? Do you think I'm going to eat you too?"
Artemis shrank under the Beast's single-eyed glare, unable to answer verbally. Unable to do anything. She felt as though any action she would take was going to be used against her, or worse. To die in an unfamiliar universe...
"I swear once I get back, the elders will die," the Beast seethed.
The young girl perked up, and the ability to speak returned though she was still struggling to breathe normally.
"The...elders?" Artemis repeated through slowly recovering breaths. "I heard...of what they did...to our land..." A feeling of warmth, no...heat...coursed through her body then as she remembered what the Elders did to her homeland. The destruction. The chaos. The despair.
The Beast.
The once elegant and beautiful Princess of Athentha was turned into a despicable being for the Elders' own gains, that much Artemis knew. But why? Why?!?! There was so much the young elf did not know, so much she wanted to learn. Yes, the Beast was a scary being, but... It was only scary because Artemis knew what it was before it...became...
She was intelligent, she was ruthless, yet she was caring and kind. She was beautiful, graceful, talented, wanted nothing but the best for her people.
The Beast just did not care for such things. The Beast, the Princess's reciprocal, only wanted to devour.
Artemis' aura began to shroud her form again as she felt the anger welling up inside, like the fires of this land's volcanic valley ready to devour this strange city in its liquid hellfires.
"Princess Sakimura, why do you allow others to control you?!" she finally bellowed, whirling around to glare up at the Beast. "You know you're being used, yet you allow it! Is this some half-baked plan to destroy the Elders and restore peace to a land long lost to ruin?!" Distant shouting caught Alvin Davidson's ears as he closed in on the park, despite the sirens' wailing behind him. With the night this empty and lacking in pedestrians, it was easy to hear voices over shrill noises. His smirk grew wider as he freed a hand from a handlebar to reach into his pocket. Several hundred meters in front of him, a large tower burst from underneath a manhole cover, sending the lid flipping like a wild pancake into an alleyway. It loomed over the street, bright lights of different colors flashing on a variety of its ten or so levels. Up top, a swiveling security lens spotted Alvin on his motorbike. His response to this? "Adios," he said as he placed a large sticky bomb on the motorcycle before leaping off into a combat roll, letting the bike swivel and veer into the tower. Upon its impact against the weapons tower, Alvin clicked the button on a remote, blowing up the motorcycle in a fiery explosion and taking one of the two authority vehicles with it, as well as leaving a melting dent in the control tower. As it fell forward, though, it unleashed a cluster of ten warheads from its top, all aimed for Alvin. he looked up, and with only five seconds to respond intelligently, held up his right hand. A ring on his fourth finger instantly brought up a holographic shield, solid enough to make contact with any physical attack and strong enough to withstand the heaviest of mortar rounds. They were still being tested against nuclear capability, however, and this shield's lifespan was about to become obsolete. BOOMBOOMBOOMBOBOOOOMB-B-BOOMBOOBOOM BOOOOOOMMMM!The shield faded into static towards the last four impacts, but it still held its own against the missiles. Alvin's smirk became a genuine smile, and as the weapons tower finally fell and went up in a giant ball of flame and cybernetic parts and motherboards, he had his focus now on one sole target: the only remaining automated police car. Its bright headlights were set on the Captain in a static glare, and a burst of wind swept through the park, billowing Alvin's shoulder-length hair out like a small heroic scarf. "ALVIN DAVIDSON. Surrender and River City Legislation shall bring you no harm. Resist arrest and you will be apprehended accordingly."He scoffed. "Why don't ya come here and make me, you Nightrider wannabe?" Alvin sneered.

Rin slammed the girl against the wall as she now glared at her, their faces facing each other. The anger that graced the half breed's face was one that usually came.
You will call me Rin. I hate the title of princess. I am not letting anyone use me. I am allowing myself to return to what I once was. You... You have seen what the elders had done no?
Rin sighed as she loosened up the grip on the girl. If Artemis wanted to run, the half breed wouldn't stop her. She didn't hold the girl prisoner if she didn't wish to learn the truth.
Rin, in fact, had no idea why she was here. This place wasn't home. Wasn't the safe, same place that didn't smell of wretched humans.
Of course if you want to know the truth you can follow me. If not go to the humans, I'm sure they're have fun dissecting you to learn all about you. But if you wish to become something greater beyond your mortal coil, you can follow me.
The choice was always the one she gave the choice to. Rin always wanted to make sure it was the person who decided their fate. She turned from Artemis and began to walk through the park.
She wasn't afraid of getting caught. But she wondered about the girl. About what she could be used for. She shrugged. This place was odd and Rin didn't like the smell of it.
She decided to head home.

Artemis felt cold brick against her back once more as her form bounced off from the force of the Beast's powerful shove. The being loomed over like a suffocating blanket of fear, and Artemis could feel her small spark of courage fizzle out.
"You will call me Rin. I hate the title of princess," it spat. "I am not letting anyone use me. I am allowing myself to return to what I once was."
But...she was never that way. The Princess would have fought tooth and nail to have stayed true to herself...
"You... You have seen what the elders had done no?"
"Yes, yes I did," Artemis squeaked. "How they ravaged the land, pit our own people against one another. The needless bloodshed...
"The tear..."
The same tear that led Artemis to this strange world called River City. It must have closed by now...
She felt the Beast relinquish her grasp, and Artemis stumbled away, widening the gap between them. The Beast seemed not to care anymore, leaving the young elf to her fate.
"Of course if you want to know the truth you can follow me. If not go to the humans, I'm sure they're have fun dissecting you to learn all about you. But if you wish to become something greater beyond your mortal coil, you can follow me."
Become...greater? Artemis stared at her feet as she played with those thoughts the Beast named Rin fed her. Become greater...but she showed how powerful she was with the gang members some time ago. Powerful enough to hold her own in this land.
The explosion in the distance snapped Artemis out of her trance, and she noted the Beast walking away, past a billboard that looked outdated, featuring a young man with long navy blue hair with a sword hoisted over his shoulder. The text beside him read, "Cruxis. The Shattered Army's pair of balls. Join today and liberate. 203X."
She called to Rin, "The tear back home, it's...It's closed up."

Rin stopped then as she heard the cold words coming from Artemis's lips. The tear had closed? Meaning she was stuck here... Rin looked over her shoulder. The glare cutting into Artemis as if she could kill with a look.
Lucky for the girl, she couldn't do that.
However, the half breed looked up to see a sign. The blue haired man made her growl low. Cruxis it said. Raising her hand, fire came forth and ran like a crystal spiral into the sign. It exploded a few minutes more, debris flying to the ground.
How do you know the tear is closed? You don't even know where you are now. Think about what I said and come find me. Or find the blue hair man and see if he will offer what I can. Up to you.
Rin then lowered her arm and shoved them into her coat pockets. She decided to walk through the park. It would be a nice walk. She needed to find the tear and go home.
This place would never suit her. It was something that felt wrong to her. Felt out of place. She looked over her shoulder once more. Rin did like to bargain with people, fill them with false hopes and promises.
She turned around and returned to where Artemis was left. Her form peering over the girl once more, her arms gripping the smooth flesh of Artemis once more. Her crimson black orb of an eye peering into her soul.
Frightened of me? Are you sure there isn't anything in the world I can offer you that would make you wish to be greater? Shedding that weak mortal coil and live beyond the meager life. I can offer you anything. Let me inside. Let me feast upon you. And all you wish for...
Rin paused as she leaned in, her face so close it was almost as if she would eat her. The half breed smiled, knowing that Artemis was afraid. She was toe to toe with the beast of legend.
I'm going to erase the elders. Gain more power to erase everything they did. And reclaim what was lost. But before I do that, I'm going to eat every last human here.

So sudden was the Beast's assault on the billboard, that it caused Artemis to jump back a couple of steps. Her vision tunneled, and her heart raced. What was it about the man pictured on the billboard that drove Rin to that level of anger? Was it his appearance? His moniker? The remark of "pair of balls"? It seemed like a cultural stigma in this universe to add something lewd and vulgar on a public billboard, so maybe Rin was cleaning up a cultural mess...
"How do you know the tear is closed? You don't even know where you are now," she sneered at Artemis. What the Beast said was truth. Artemis didn't know what universe this was. All she knew was that the tear back to Athentha closed, and she was trapped here. No means to return. Which meant, no matter how powerful Rin was, she couldn't just will a tear back home.
"Think about what I said and come find me. Or find the blue hair man and see if he will offer what I can. Up to you."
With that, Rin turned and walked away, leaving Artemis stunned, speechless. Breathless, but only for a moment. She took a deep breath and shook her head, trying to quell the tunnel-mindedness. All she did was make herself dizzy and collapse into a bench. Some time later, Rin returned, looming over Artemis again. The young elf's eyes fluttered open and flicked up. Liquid panic in her chest again, she pulled her robes around her face and whipped out a hand, sending a wave of energy to try pushing the being back.
"LEAVE ME ALONE!" she bellowed. She'd have much rather dealt with the gang members from earlier. She felt her robed arm grasped once again. Just what gave the Beast the right to assault and bully her like this?!
"Frightened of me? Are you sure there isn't anything in the world I can offer you that would make you wish to be greater? Shedding that weak mortal coil and live beyond the meager life. I can offer you anything. Let me inside. Let me feast upon you. And all you wish for..."
Artemis kicked out and squirmed again, unleashing one last desperate shockwave from her form to try beating back the Beast once more. The loss of energy caused her to lay motionless on the bench, but she found the will to speak. Weakly, but she still spoke.
"Don't. Leave me be, I'm of no use to you," she wept. "Stop harassing me...stop harassing innocent beings!"
She could feel the gap between the two close, the heat of the woman's breath on her soft skin. Sweat beaded on her brow in anticipation. The Beast was known to devour her prey at this distance, and Artemis could feel a sick and twisted end approaching.
"I'm going to erase the elders. Gain more power to erase everything they did. And reclaim what was lost. But before I do that, I'm going to eat every last human here," was all Rin breathed. Why every human...
"...and what did the beings of this world do to deserve that ill-gotten fate?" Artemis asked heartlessly as she curled up into a tighter ball, struggling again to release herself from Rin's grasp. "Why do you hate that man with the blue hair? He's done nothing, never appeared in our world. Neither did these humans. It's...it's terrorism, Lady Rin!"
"Commencing apprehension sequence of: ALVIN DAVIDSON."Alvin smirked as he turned on his heel and sprinted off into the park, dropping a second plastic explosive on the ground as the vehicle behind him roared to savage life in pursuit. He counted a few Mississippi's in his head, mentally waiting for the car to drive over where he dropped his explosive. Clicking a button on his remote when he counted the third Mississippi, all you could hear was a thunderous explosion rocking the very ground of the park, sending pieces of the engine, the car's body and various other parts flying in every direction. Including up, in amazing acrobatics... That explosion, though, was lined up perfectly with a sudden burst of yellow light in the distance, with its own rain of debris that resembled what used to be a billboard. Alvin slowed his pace, unable to fanfare his success as he observed the scene hundreds of yards in front of him. He ducked behind a trash bin and watched two women have an argument. Then the Captain rolled his eyes, frowning. "Typical women," he murmured. "Always gotta argue about something...and the supernatural types, they gotta flaunt their shit like they got dicks to wave around. What's with that?" Alvin peered around the side of the bin after a few seconds of listening to the distant speaking, now seeing one of the woman looming over the other, who was laying down on a bench. Clearly, the standing one was bullying the laying one. What possessed her to even do that? He only grumbled under his breath as he put a hand to his head. "I wouldn't be doing my duty if I don't step in," Alvin noted mentally. The whirring of helicopters overhead soon caught his attention, and he turned his focus to the skies to see what was going on. Automated helicopters now...Apaches at that. Complete with magenta searchlights and whirring miniguns ready to unleash a spray of bullets that could cut a man in half... And nowhere for Alvin to duck behind for good cover. What should he do? If he called out to the quarreling women to get the hell out, he'd attract the automatic helicopters' attention and get all of them killed. However, if he left them to their fate, either he would be continually pursued, or they would be. Either way... "I got one shot at this..." Alvin grabbed at his belt and pulled a smoke grenade off. He pulled the pin and threw it with as much force as he could. The searchlight up above caught the projectile and followed it, and Alvin could hear the subsequent plink noises that rang out afterward. He didn't know how close to the women that grenade got, and he knew he was only strong enough to throw a simple projectile a hundred yards. They were doubled that distance form him, and the grenade rolling would do much. Actually, it was a bad decision on his part, he felt... Or maybe it wasn't? At once, the helicopter above fired off several rocket pods from its launchers, and sprayed a burst of white hot bullets at the floored grenade expelling its white smoke. Alvin's hope that they could use the smoke as a means to get out and find a place to hide teetered between "lost" and "fulfilled." The adrenaline rush affected his ability to make wise decision at the moment, as the very city itself was watching his and the other women's every move. Feeling out River City's automated system was... ...Tiresome. And the report at the end of the day was going to be a hell of an email to send Nathan.

Rin eyed the helicopter then and muttered low. So many watching the famed beast do her work. Though what bothered her the most was the closing of the tear.
Rin didn't want to be here. It was noisy and loud and full of things she didn't like. Looking up at the helicopter, her hand would once more shoot out the ice crystal shards at it.
If they hit the metal object, it would explode as well as the billboard. Her ears caught the noise of another nearby. She vowed to Artemis then.
Remember what I said. Til we meet again. Farewell.
With that she moved towards the other being. Silent and without a word. He looked like someone she had seen before, someone familiar. Though she could be wrong.
It was here she caught up the man and placed her hand on his shoulder. She placed her lips against his ear.
Evening stranger.

"UNKNOWN1, prepare for apprehension," the automated voice called from the hovering chopper, pinpointing a beam of red light over the being's face. Its guns began to whir to life, and before it could even hose it down with a spray of its white hot projectiles, the being shot it down in a simple blast of ice crystals. The helicopter spun then, whirling madly out of the sky from its safe height towards an open grassy clearing in the middle of some trees. A massive explosion sent gale force winds in every direction, shaking tree limbs loose and rolling the frail Artemis out of the park bench.
She fell with a thud and a yelp, her robes fluttering over her form and brushing against the Beast's ankles. Artemis looked up through puffy eyes, stared down by that one single red and black eye. Like it was piercing her very soul. "Remember what I said. Til we meet again. Farewell." That was it. The Beast walked away, leaving Artemis to lie there on the tarmac walkway. Till they met again... That was foreboding... She pushed herself up, dusting her robes off and fixing her hair as best as she could before seeking sanctuary in the oddest of all buildings.
Picking the lock to the bathroom door of the small concession stand Rin slammed the small elf against earlier, Artemis managed to slip into its darkness, closing the door behind her and hoping the morning would come and vanquish this horrible night. Alvin, meanwhile... A hand grabbed his shoulder, and instantly, before the unknown assailant could say anything, Alvin turned around and grabbed its arm in an attempt to chicken wing in, all while trying to dig his knee into its back, his intent to force it to the ground. He didn't care if it was male, female, AI, or whatever at this point. His adrenaline rush was still on a high, and he was not going to have any further assaults on his being tonight. "State your purpose!" Alvin snarled low through gritted teeth, his brown hair curtaining his face and shoulders.

Before she could utter a word, Rin was flipped and thrown to the ground. She looked at Alvin. He clearly didn't remember her. Pity.
It's a shame you don't remember me Alvin. My purpose? And why should I diverge this to you? What can you possibly do to me that would make me afraid? No shaman here to stop me. No hero to save you.
Rin smiled as she stared Alvin in the face. She was defiant to the man because she could be. And he was stopping her from getting back to the tear and going home.
Rin hated this place. And she didn't like the people here. But Artemis had unnerved her. Another Athenthian being here and yet she was afraid of the beast.
It didn't make sense to her. In fact nothing did. These beings didn't want to be above their mortal coils and so it was their problem.
For now she laid there glaring at Alvin.

Alvin only tightened his grip and pulled further on the being's--woman's--arm, shrugging off her complacent remarks. There was no reason for her to be like this. He remained straightfaced, only meaning to ask one question. "What do you mean by all of this?" he growled. "Shaman. Hero. It all means nothing to me if it doesn't benefit the State or the United Commonwealth. Now I will tell you again, STATE YOUR PURPOSE!" A light breeze breathed across the park, billowing blades of grass and rustling the skinny bare branches of the trees. More sirens in the distance sounded, and the same automated voice calling for Alvin and an Unknown-One. No vehicles approached--yet. No androids with law enforcement equipment surrounded the vicinity--yet. Just sirens echoing through the otherwise dead silence of the urban night...
He thought Commonwealth soldiers were an exception to River City.
